Is Boosting Our Memory Possible?

The Possibility of Retaining Our Memory is Important to Consider

Boosting our memory is a topic that spans age brackets.

Improving memory is a subject nearly anyone of any age is willing to discuss because the ability to retain information through our memory is an asset that our future depends on.

Protecting and nourishing our memory is important!

Students are interested in how to increase their memory. Middle aged people are so busy with important relationships and activities in their business and personal lives that this issue is very important to their success. The elderly have typical and atypical concerns about memory loss.

Fear of Alzheimer's disease lurks in the backs of many people’s minds these days. For the average person this concern is not necessary, but we should stay alert to any news on ways this disease could be averted or possibly diminished if it were to set in.

Alzheimer's, however, is not what is behind the common memory loss that most people deal with in today’s fast-paced world. With so much information coming in at such high speeds it is sometimes simply too much for even young people to keep up with all there is to remember!

Common Sense Tips for Boosting Memory Include:

• Don’t forget to get enough sleep. Too many of us don’t heed this important rule.

• Drink plenty of water throughout the day. (Sometimes, sleepiness = a need for water.)

• Take time for recreation--don’t be a work-a-holic.

• Live so that work and family relationships are maintained to reduce stress.

•Don’t smoke or consume alcohol if you want your memoryto be at its best.

• Avoid junk foods, particularly artificial sweeteners.

•Read. (A very special tip: read from a sound daily devotional book on a regular basis.)

• Stay active in volunteer organizations.

New Studies Continue to Give Us More Insight into Ways to Increase Our Memory.

We can follow the research and consider the suggestions that come from the study's results.

• Strawberries contain a flavonoid called fisetin but you don’t need to remember that--just eat strawberries while studying!

• Doctors have found that after learning something new a bit of rest to let the brain thoroughly absorb the information helps us remember it better.

• Eating salmon regularly or taking an Omega-3 supplement is a very good idea to keep in mind.

• Using other supplements, such as ginko biloba, have proven to be helpful for maintaining memory.

• Avoid drugs that impair or change your mental condition--duh.

Boosting Our Memory is a Science!

Besides the desire to understand the human mind, the research being done to discover why and how we remember information, as well as how to preserve and even improve our memory, helps doctors determine treatment for those with memory loss due to disease or trauma.

Advances in exploring how our minds work continue to be made and it is fairly easy to stay on top of the latest research news about human memory.

The research is beneficial to everyone and there are opportunities to contribute to the cause. If you are interested in helping with this research you might like to contact organizations like the Salk Institute and the Memory Disorders Research Center to find out how you can help.

In the meantime, play Memory and other games with a child or someone in a nursing home, keep a journal, learn to do new things by studying a foreign language or developing a new hobby (such as learning to write on HubPages), and take care of your body--it’s the only one you get!

On Stress and Memory:

Important:

Research any products you want to use and discuss them with your doctor before making a decision to take them.

Research any major changes of lifestyle and discuss them with your doctor before deciding to make them.

Good points and I think writing and working on the computer are great ways to fight it - at least that's what I'm sticking with!

Ah, computer work...rather silly to leave that one out... :) Computers certainly do help keep us sharp as they offer endless learning opportunities!

Thanks so much for stopping by and leaving a good reminder!

Great hub. I love how most of the suggestions are simple easy things to do. It's amazing how much water affects all our biological processes (including memory) and how most people don't drink enough water. Keep up the good work!

Thanks much! We absolutely do not drink enough water. Appreciate your stopping in and leaving a comment!

RT - thanks for the tips. When I was in elementary school, one of my teachers (a nun) used to tell us that people need to use their brains all the time, to learn new things, and provide challenges for their brains. That an unchallenged brain becomes stupified, a use it or lose it kind of thing.

This is even more important as we age. Thanks much for stopping by and commenting.

Wow! Such fascinating tips! I had no idea that something as simple as drinking more water and eating strawberries and salmon could help your memory! Great Read!

L R Goodman: Thanks much for stopping by and commenting. It's interesting to think about how common-sense living, such as with drinking adequate water and getting enough sleep, can help us in so many ways.

Kay Creates: Thanks for stopping in to read and comment. We have enough information about how to take care of ourselves...paying attention and doing it is a little difficult at times though, yes? :)

Excellent subject for a hub, and quite useful. Too bad i will probably forget to implement any of this.

Good Hub, I had forgotten about the benefits of ginkgo biloba~ I think I'll start taking it again before I re-forget (haha)! Seriously, I'm in my middle age and this hub is the kind of helpful info us boomers need to read.

Laceylinks:

Thanks kindly! I know what you mean--remembering to take supplements is not always easy, especially those we don't take everyday. (I'm not sure if gingko biloba is one for every day, or just what the guidelines for times to take it are.) Taking care of ourselves as we should is the best way to avoid needing a doctor's care as we age. Remembering that isn't easy either! :)
