Shaped Baby Blankets For Easy Crocheted Edgings

If you have not seen my introductory crochet hub on easy edgings for baby blanket projects you might like to take a look at it here.

As well, you might take a look at the Beginner’s Crochet Project and Pretty Crochet Edgings before continuing through this hub.

If you are an experienced crochet crafter, however, you may have no trouble picking up on the how to for these projects simply by looking this hub over.

Either way, thanks much for stopping by to check out this crocheted edging for a shaped baby blanket! I hope you enjoy making a pretty crocheted edging for a very useful baby blanket.

Curved Corners for Crochet-Edged Blankets

Examples Of Corner Shapes For Making An Easy Crochet Edged Baby Blanket

Now that you’ve learned about crocheting edges on flannel baby blankets I hope this hub expands your crochet horizons a bit. You will be using the same basic instructions from the hubs mentioned above, however, the unique addition will be in the shape of the blanket.

This hub focuses on changing the shapes of the corners. It includes two easy crocheted examples, but the possibilities are endless. Visions for the future dance in my head...

This first set of photos shows you how to cut a simple rounded corner with everyday supplies. The size of the curved corner is determined by the size of the plate that you use. I find that a simple dinner plate gives me easy-to-crochet curves.

Fold the flannel square into a triangle and cut the layered corners. Refold the triangle to opposite sides and cut those layered corners in the same manner. As always, be careful not to stretch the cut fabric edges as you fold or crochet the flannel.

Choose A Crochet Edging

To crochet you will begin about 6 inches before the cut curve begins on one of the sides. Then you can follow the basic directions for crocheting a simple or a pretty edge from one of the hubs mentioned above, or you may use a different edging pattern.

A nice variety of other edgings is available here. One of my favorites is this one showing how ribbons can be woven into spaces.

The edging I used on this blanket begins with the basic from Number 2 in this series (the Beginners Crochet Project). After connecting the end to the beginning make 3 single crochet stitches, a half-double crochet stitch, then 3 singles that connect back into the half-double, then another half-double. Connect to the next loop on the fabric edge and repeat around the blanket.

Cutting Sweetheart Corners

Cut the flannel cleanly as with the curved cornered baby blanket so you can crochet the edges with ease.

This second set of photos display how to cut a sweetheart corner. Think through whether you want to cut each corner separately or whether you want to layer them.

Layering them for cutting is a bit trickier with the sweetheart corner. You might like to make a paper pattern and practice cutting the sweetheart corner on other fabric before cutting your flannel.

Attention To Spacing For The Sweetheart Corner

To crochet this blanket you will begin as before, about 6 inches before the cut curve on one of the sides. However, when you approach a sweetheart corner pay close attention to the spacing of your punctures.

Make sure you look ahead as you work to the center of the “heart” so that you place that puncture 1/4” below the “heart’s” indention. Otherwise, you simply follow the basic directions for crocheting a simple, pretty edge from one of the hubs mentioned above.
