Scrabble Is An Extra-Ordinary Valentine's Day Gift!

Game time is an excellent opportunity to learn more about other people.

To get the most out of games with other people look for integrity, character, and other significant qualities while playing.

Take advantage of the interaction that you can have during game time and learn what you need to know about other people.

It's a great chance to evaluate who they are and what the chances of a relationship with them should look like.

Don't miss out on the many opportunities that playing games can provide--you just never know how important it could be.

The gift of a Scrabble game can give more than you might expect!

Scrabble Is A Useful Valentine's Day Gift

☐ My husband and I play a friendly game of Scrabble. If one of us misses a good word then we help the other. “Look here, Honey-pie, if you do this instead of that, what happens?” We drink hot tea or eat popcorn and discuss any number of things.

We both have very competitive personalities so games can get interesting, but we have learned to relax and laugh and enjoy some down time as we help each other hone our thinking skills and sharpen our memories.

I’ve always thought that playing a game was a great chance to get to know a person, as in to evaluate a person’s personality and character. Cheaters, angry people, whiners, spoiled brats, followers, leaders, cunning as opposed to creative, you name it and their traits come out in a good game. It gives us a chance to get to know more about each other and ourselves if we are willing to think through the behaviors we see.

The dance of the game is an opportunity to observe what kinds of responses you’ll get from new acquaintances in different situations. Does the other person reveal that they are controlling or distrustful by insisting on keeping score all the time? As well, the casual conversation that takes place during a game can open up insights into the past, present, and whether you want there to be a future.

We might be able to determine the maturity level of a person after playing a few games. Being able to gauge how patient a person is, or whether a person is willing to have fun with something you want to do even if they are not particularly interested can be important indicators of how much time you want to invest in the relationship. If you are going to grow old with someone you need a person who is willing to do things to stretch their mind, not just exercise their body in some way.

I guess that’s why it occurred to me the other evening that playing games on a regular basis should be a requirement before any relationship goes to the next level. Imagine how companies could benefit if a psychologist played a game of Scrabble with prospective employees.

Just think of the bad characters you could avert from your children’s path if you played a few word games with their new friends. How might an argument turn out if everyone were required to set it aside and play a game before resuming the issue?

One of the most important reasons to play games with little children is because they grow up. Parents need to have important conversations with older children but that's not always an easy task. The habit of playing games develops habits of conversation--and we all know what a rare commodity talking with teen children is unless parents plan ahead. An eye on the future will give you patience with Candy Land and Old Maid today.

So get out your Valentine's Day gift wrap (or any day that touches your heart!) and tape up a game, perhaps even a Scrabble game, then write "Because I want to to get to know you better!" on the gift tag. It could be the beginning of something beautiful or an opportunity to have something revealed that you need to know! And, if it is returned to you next year just google in all the letter tile crafts that are available online. You’ll be hooked on Scrabble one way or another!

I so agree. I grew up in a family hat played games and I played a million games with my 3 boys I think. Good hub.

Thanks. This concept has me thinking... :) Maybe I'll write more detail later on!

I think this is a good idea. I've never been one for card games. I like rowdy party games (charades) and Trivial Pursuit. I play Scrabble with my Mom when I see her. My mom's games are bridge and Hand & Foot.

The best game to play with someone you don't know well is Monopoly! I remember playing it with my cousins and a guy I was casually dating, and I found out almost too much about him!

Oh yes, you betcha' Monopoly would could do the job just as well, but any game playing would probably be helpful.

Thanks very much for reading and commenting! :)

How intriguing. I loved playing games growing up and even as adults we used to play more games. For awhile I had to stop playing cards and refused to play any games with my late husband, because of his competitive nature. It took the fun out of it. When he finally 'got it' I resumed playing cards. Nice hub.

Comments are always welcome, but to receive ones with real input into the hub's topic is reason for celebration and gratitude! Thanks much!

So glad your husband "got it." Why take the fun out of games? :)

Wow! I had not read this hub and it's great. It is so true that playing a game with someone reveals their character.

It's funny. I was in a past relationship with a con man (that's a novel in itself) He always pretended to be really dumb (that was part of his con.) I taught him to play Scrabbble and he ALWAYS won!

I thought about it afterwards and he was exquisite at strategy even though he was not the best speller.

I absolutely love this hub and I hope you don't mind me putting it as a link in my "More on games" box on one of my game hubs. Very nice!

Yes, exquisite at strategy--well said. I'm going to check to see if you have written about your experience with him.

Thanks kindly for stopping by and giving this a read, as well as for your interesting comments. I appreciate that you are linking my hub to yours--very much so! :)

Scrabble is a great game, especially for kids! Not only is it wonderful spending quality time with your kids, but it also helps them in spelling and learning new words. I haven't played scrabble since my kids were little. I think I will have to buy it again and get my husband to play! Great hub! Voted up and useful.

What a great Hub. We always played games in my childhood family and still play them now on my adult family. I think I kind of always knew in the back of my mind that games are a good way to model healthy behavior for our children.... But I never thought it through as clearly as you have. You are so right, we learn an awful lot about someone's personality, character, and temper by playing games with them. I really like this. SHARING

My wife does not like games so I don't play them much especially since the kids are grown. I agree that games are useful.

It's too bad that you don't get to play games very much. They are indeed useful in many ways. Maybe you'll get to have fun playing with the kids again one day. Thanks much for checking out this Scrabble hub!

I love playing scrabble since I was in high school and it was a very long long time ago. Now I teach my small nieces and nephews how to do it. Playing scrabble increases there knowledge in english language. It is a great fun. Thanks for sharing.

Good for you! Your nieces and nephews will benefit from your teaching them how to play Scrabble in so many ways and you are making memories with them that they will look back on one day with a smile.

Thank you for coming by for a visit and letting me hear from you. Too bad you can't pop over for a Scrabble game this afternoon!
