~ Stevia (Sweet Leaf) Plant ~

Stevia has elongated oval shaped leaves with serrated edges. Its dark green leaves can be used raw or dried for storage. Refined stevia is white, much like refined sugar. Beware, equal amounts of processed stevia to sugar is distasteful!

❦ The Best Stevia Sweetener--Sun Crystals Is A Winning Combination

It’s hard to believe that there are people who still do not take today’s warnings against artificial sweeteners seriously. It is impossible to understand, really.

Doctors are still sounding the warnings, but a large segment of society continues to ignore the risks that artificial sweeteners pose to their health, including the indications that they often increase weight gain in the long run.

Out the long list of concerns, insomnia, which is on the rise, is the latest warning I've read about. It's so sad because taking the risks for any of the concerns is so unnecessary for people today.

Products like Sun Crystals make eating even our desserts healthier by combining cane sugar and stevia. The benefits of both can work well together in many recipes.

There's no need to buy and use artificial sweeteners with healthier products so readily available.

Sun Crystals Is One Of The Newest Safe Sweeteners

Honey has been a well-known and safe sweetener since time began, and agave nectar came to be widely-known and popular over the last 15 years.

There are a few other natural sugar substitutes, as well, but when stevia hit the market it quickly began making public headlines and word of mouth advertising turned into a wildfire.

Sun Crystals Is The Sweet Supplement

As various forms became available, the FDA approved stevia as a supplement rather than a sweetener. While there may be some health benefits directly attributable to stevia leaves people wanted it for their lemonade, not their arthritis or their bronchitis. New stevia (or sweet leaf) containing products like Sun Crystals brand continue to be developed.

Truvia is one of my favorite brands. With an added fruit scent and flavor due to that company’s manner of production, this stevia product has an extra-pleasant aroma. I loved it right away in any fruit dessert, fruit salad or fruit drink, as well as in most teas, but not in my coffee. I didn’t use my raw home-grown stevia in my coffee, either, preferring sugar, so it was no big deal.

However, concerning questions soon came up about Truvia. These issues seem to be resolved one day, and reinstated the next. I’m still fine with using it because what I’ve read doesn’t present a problem to me. I can say that as time has gone by I’ve come to wonder why I haven’t seen the questions directly addressed by the company, although that does not mean that there is a problem with Truvia.

Even though I like Truvia, when I was introduced to Sun Crystals by a brilliant, beautiful, and precious young woman this past week I didn’t hesitate to take a second look. (This delightful description of her has nothing whatsoever to do with stevia products, it just happens to be a fact. And, since she's my daughter, I can say it with authority!)

In reading about Sun Crystals I was quite pleased because stevia alone will not create that wonderful brown color we expect from our baked goods. Sugar is needed for that job, but I had learned that cutting the sugar in half and then adding enough stevia to equal out the other half was not always the perfect solution.

If you know anything about stevia, too much of this herb does not give you the extra sweetening effect that too much sugar gives. Too much stevia is just plain awful, so a first taste of too much is why some people have an instant aversion to it. Stopping to figure out how much sugar, then how much stevia to use in a recipe is sometimes tricky, particularly if I am in a hurry.

A smart-thinking somebody came up with the solution in Sun Crystals. The cane sugar and stevia are pre-combined. I'm sure it's not half and half, but whatever it is, they've figured it out correctly. This product is one of those “I wish I’d thought of that” ideas.

The people who know about these things can continue trying to track down the facts on other sweeteners. I’m fine with using this two-ingredient product when I am baking. There are more recipes available on the Sun Crystals website but the dear girl I mentioned above posted the one below. I inserted my cow milk substitutions in brackets.

Hope You Enjoy This Sun Crystals Recipe!

I have found a product by Boresha Coffee that is wonderful, low glycemic and no after taste. It is granulated and my child loves it. I like the Sun Crystals idea and will look for it and give it a try.

RTalloni 13 months ago

Thanks, H., for stopping by and letting me/us know about the product you use. I'll be looking to try that soon I hope. Let us know how the Sun Crystals compares. If you do a hub about it let me know so I can link it to this one.

Always appreciate hearing from you!

With so many sweeteners, it's hard to know what's best. Thanks for the info. Great hub!

tebo 13 months ago

Strange how those artificial sweeteners can cause weight gain. I have heard that before. I think you will find that rolled oats contain gluten though. Stevia sounds like a good addition to the pantry. Interesting hub

rpalulis 13 months ago

I have not used Stevia before but would like to experiment with this herb. I too find it amazing how many either choose to ignore the health warnings or simply just are unaware of the harm these artificial sweeteners cause. Great hub, voted up and useful!

RTalloni 13 months ago

Hi tebo:

I'm just getting ready to research the topic of artificial sweeteners and weight gain. There's more to it than I thought.

I think you are right re the rolled oats, but I think it is wheat gluten that many people are concerned about. That would be a good topic to research, too.

Thanks much for stopping by and leaving your input!

rpaulis:

Just remember, with stevia, start small and work up to the taste that suits you! :)

Re the artificial sweeteners...the government wouldn't let them sell it if was harmful, right?

Thanks kindly for stopping in and for leaving your input!

graceomalley 13 months ago

Thank you for this - I was wondering how to use stevia in baking, and didn't want to ruin batches of cookies on experiments. That would just be wrong.

RTalloni 13 months ago

That would absolutely just be wrong! :) So glad this was helpful to you.

Thank you bunches for coming by and leaving your note!

Thanks for the information about Sun Crystals. It’s hard to find a healthy sweetener that tastes good and works well in all situations. My favorite sweetener for cereal and coffee is xylitol, since it has several health benefits, but it’s expensive and also dangerous for dogs. Since there are two dogs in my family I really need a different sweetener, and I certainly don’t want to use an artificial one. I’ll look for Sun Crystals in my local stores.

KoffeeKlatch Gals 13 months ago

Thanks for clearing up a few things about Stevia for me. At the beginning of summer I passed over this herb because I wasn't familiar with it. I wasn't sure how sweet it would be or how to use it. I'll have to give the products a try. Plus your recipe sounds great

RTalloni 9 months ago

Joe Macho:

You are welcome--thank you for stopping by with your input.

The products will get you by, but next year you'll enjoy growing sweet leaf plant and surprising visitors with its sweet taste. Let us know if you try it in a new recipe!
